David Wippel
Founder of Glasswise
I only learned about the new EU regulation quite late. Had it not been for my wife, I probably would have missed it altogether. Once I got into it, I immediately realized its potential. Not just as a business, but especially as a solution to a problem.
Anyone who enjoys dining out knows the feeling. You're seated at the table, and the sommelier brings a bottle of wine. It's a great match, and you think, "I'd love to enjoy this bottle at home with friends."
Now, there are a few apps that allow you to scan the label and document your wine experience. Only to forget about it once you're back home.
So, how can we create a path that leads from the bottle on the table to the vineyard's website or shop? Without having to Google extensively and thereby interrupting the table conversation?
That's the problem I aim to solve with Glasswise.
The EU regulation doesn't allow using the E-Label for marketing and e-commerce. Understandably, we all want to ensure that wine is handled responsibly. And of course, Glasswise's E-Label meets all legal requirements.
To offer something extra, I came up with the idea for Scan with Glasswise. I want to breathe new life into QR codes. If there has to be a QR code on the bottle anyway, why not offer something additional alongside the mandatory information?
As someone who enjoys good wine, I'm solving a problem that I myself have. And if I can support winemakers in selling more wine directly, that's a win-win situation.
A valid question. There are already several products on the market that meet all the legal requirements and are not bad. However, I am convinced that it can be done even better.
I don't want to make quick money out of a (pesky) obligation. Glasswise is not a side hustle for me. It's the logical combination of my technical and entrepreneurial skills with a personal passion. Moreover, everyone involved is either directly in the wine industry or at least a wine enthusiast. That's important to me. If you're building products for an industry, you should care about that industry.
That's why I believe Glasswise has a rightful place in the market.
Two things are very important to me: quality and design.
Since Glasswise will become part of your external image, I have the highest standards for design and functionality. Especially with Scan with Glasswise, the product must not only work flawlessly but also be aesthetically pleasing.
I'm also a fan of long-term customer relationships. The E-Label already makes this almost a necessity due to legal requirements. Nevertheless, I don't believe in restrictive contracts or the like. With Glasswise, your data belongs to you. You can switch at any time, and I will help you take your data with you.
I will also soon be releasing the entire Glasswise app under an open-source license. Even if my company no longer exists in a few years, you can continue to use everything.
And to top it off, I will pre-pay the required storage space for the E-Label websites for 10 years. This ensures 100% long-term availability.
Meeting the legal requirements is just the first step. I am currently in the final testing phase with selected businesses. The product will be available to everyone on October 31, 2023.
After the official launch, the immediate focus will be on getting Scan with Glasswise to the point where it can also enter a testing phase. I currently plan to release this feature around the turn of the year.
